More Publicity for Doctors in Training

For those of you who are interested I shall be appearing on 18 Doughty Street TV on Monday 8-9pm, to discuss the issues about doctor training. It will be chaired by Iain Dale and other guests include: Dr Phillip Lee, Vicky Ford and Dr Shazia Ovaisi.

On the show I am happy to try and highlight specific issues/topics for junior doctors, so feel free to leave comments below and I’ll try and bring them into the discussion on Monday. Wish me luck!

I'll wish you luck but I'm sure you won't need it. I'll try to tune in ... it should be interesting.

I'll look forward to seeing it, Michelle, if you are going to post an excerpt like you did last time. I really appreciated seeing and hearing you as a living and breathing (electronically albeit) soul.
Cheers,
Ian

As always -thanks Ian - I'll try and post an excerpt afterwards! Michelle

I am just glad that this topic is getting air time. We need to stand up for ourselves. Training matters and patients should want us to get the best training possible. Thanks for this blog and for taking the time to both write the blog and talk on live TV....I'm not sure I could do it. Good luck. Sarahx

On the news this morning there was talk about the lack of doctors in rural areas ( again) and the need to find them from overseas.

Crazy world!

Dr Michelle Tempest said...

Thanks Jeremy! Thanks also Simon, many countries are short of doctors, and we need our doctors in UK hospitals....although it does sound appealing to be the doctor in rural outback. Thanks for the comments. Michelle

I'm amazed how quickly this issue has suddenly taken off in the last few weeks. I had noticed over the last 2 years that the number of perfectly good UK doctors coming to Australia and choosing to stay had been rising, and didn't realise how bad it had become until recently on seeing the UK media coverage and blog entries.

Ten years ago doctors from the UK arriving in Australia would have told me that they just "wanted a change" and would probably go back at some stage, but usually decided to stay because it was so good here. Now they freely admit that they have come here with a view to staying because "medical training in the UK is devolving into a dog's breakfast".

Personally, I found recently that due to the European Work-Exchange agreements, as an Australian trained specialist surgeon, I can no longer come to the UK to work or gain experience as all jobs must be offered to EU passport holders first, of which there would be so many applicants I would have no hope of coming to offer my services.

I thought that with all the overseas doctors who would be forced to leave there would be plenty of choice positions for local trainees... obviously not.

It makes me wonder who will make up the workforce shortfall, if not overseas doctors and not local UK doctors... then who? Regards, Sheepish.

I am glad that finally the issues related to junior doctors have caught the media attention. However, its a shame that these issues got highlighted only after the mmc fiasco. So many junior doctors had to face the trauma due to the rushed in mmc changes. If only the DoH had thought of piloting it in a region before making it a national affair. Thanks Michelle for your continued efforts.

I didn't know about this post, as my computer was down. I would have loved to see it, if I could have gotten it where I am.
