However, its a shame that these issues got highlighted only after the mmc fiasco. So many junior doctors had to face the trauma due to the rushed in mmc changes. If only the DoH had thought of piloting it in a region before making it a national affair. Thanks Michelle for your continued efforts.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09722184301594057091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36128386.post-20312926744957144262007-03-12T05:19:00.000-07:002007-03-12T05:19:00.000-07:00I'm amazed how quickly this issue has suddenly tak...I'm amazed how quickly this issue has suddenly taken off in the last few weeks. I had noticed over the last 2 years that the number of perfectly good UK doctors coming to Australia and choosing to stay had been rising, and didn't realise how bad it had become until recently on seeing the UK media coverage and blog entries.

Ten years ago doctors from the UK arriving in Australia would have told me that they just "wanted a change" and would probably go back at some stage, but usually decided to stay because it was so good here. Now they freely admit that they have come here with a view to staying because "medical training in the UK is devolving into a dog's breakfast".

Personally, I found recently that due to the European Work-Exchange agreements, as an Australian trained specialist surgeon, I can no longer come to the UK to work or gain experience as all jobs must be offered to EU passport holders first, of which there would be so many applicants I would have no hope of coming to offer my services.

I thought that with all the overseas doctors who would be forced to leave there would be plenty of choice positions for local trainees... obviously not.

It makes me wonder who will make up the workforce shortfall, if not overseas doctors and not local UK doctors... then who?
